Coming Soon - Safeguarding and Child Protection for Short-term Volunteers

Coming Soon...

Aotearoa is a beautiful country with lots to be proud of for such a small country. Sadly, we also hold top spots on some scoreboards we don't want to be on. We are in the top 5 OECD countries for our child maltreatment statistics and this has been a longstanding placement.

The Children Act 2014 introduced measures for most organisations to hold a Child Protection Policy, with a requirement for that policy to support the identification and reporting of child abuse concerns.  However, all organisations working with or engaging children/young people hold these responsibilities on an ethical basis. Yet without the learning development providing our workforce with the knowledge and skills to take this forward, everything remains theoretical.

For many of our organisations working with and/or engaging children and young people there can be a significant need for support from volunteers.  It is important to make sure volunteers are also supported in accessing safeguarding and child protection learning. However, for short-term volunteers, this can prove challenging for a variety of reasons.  It is also important to acknowledge the level of training needed by these volunteers does not necessarily need to be to the same level as other staff and/or volunteers.

To help organisations manage this tricky balance we will be developing a Safeguarding and Child Protection for Short-term Volunteers eLearning course. As a guide, we would recognise a short-term volunteer as someone who is supporting an organisation for an event(s) or a limited number of hours, days or weeks.  Volunteers supporting organisations for approximately a month or more, who are on low hours but support on a regular basis, or are likely to return at other points later in the same year, should really seek to mirror the same safeguarding and child protection learning as being accessed by organisational paid staff and/or longterm volunteers.

This Safeguarding and Child Protection eLearning will support guiding volunteers through all critical elements of safeguarding and child protection in a tailored with a tailored focus on the 4 Rs of Child Protection.
